First some updates:
- Australia Network is no longer on Intelsat 5. So this is no longer the case.
- Igloo still are piss-farting around.
It’s good to see the inexorable rise in the entropy of my TV setup has been reversed.
Since it’s peak I’ve lost SBS1 and SBS2 on Optus D1, Arirang on Intelsat 8, Australia Network and BBC News on Intelsat 5, my UbiWorld Spanish channels to the company’s liquidation, TVNZ7 to the National-led government’ effed in the head policy of not supporting public television, and all my Asiasat 3S channels to a gale which proved my workmanship was substandard. Of my four sat dishes, all but one (for D1 and D2) was now defunct. Just about every channel I had actually watched had disappeared.
So I’ve got a plan to reinforce my pole for my 2.3m dish and to swing that around for Intelsat 19 C-band to get Australia Network back. at least before the start of the next AFL season. The 1.2m C-band on the roof I’ll at some stage swing round to try to get Palapa D and see if my rusty Indonesian gets better. And the 90cm that was pointing at Intelsat 8 with a single polarity Ku-band LNB that brought me Arirang I thought if I just get up on the roof and turn the LNB 90 degrees I should be able to get the Intelsat 19 Ku band channels on the Australia and New Zealand beams, and since Intelsat 19 is where Intelsat 8 was at 166 degs East I wouldn’t even need to line up the dish. So I got up on the roof and tried it, and it worked. Woo Hoo!!
Firstly TV Plus acquired UbiWorld and is broadcasting what it is calling test channels. This means the channels are currently free to air, but that situation can’t be expected to last too long. The Bosnian and Serbian channels need a DVB-S2 decoder, but the others I get with DVB-S. I can confirm 3 of the 4 Spanish channels in this list are there, TV Chile, Latele Novela (soaps) and Ritmoson Latino (music). All the Greek and Turkish channels are there including Lig TV, the soccer channel. Yesterday they were showing an English Premier League game, with Turkish commentary of course. For a full list see Lyngsat.
Next I’ve got Arirang back. Woo Hoo!! For those unfamiliar with it, it is the South Korean government’s English language service, similar to Japan’s NHK World. I find it quite an interesting channel, and if you want to get a little K-Pop other than Gangnam Style then there are shows for you.
- Vision Asia for Hindi, Telugu and Punjabi channels
- ABS-CBN for Tagalog programming
- Jadeworld for Chinese and Cantonese channels
- MySat for Arabic channels.
There are also a handful of other FTA mostly in Arabic channels including: channels from Kuwait, Eritrea and South Sudan (although from a brief look SSTV seems to have at least a news ticker in English, and rather a few technical problems).
It will suck when all the TV Plus channels get encrypted, as they probably will do some time, as I think I’ll be down to only 4 channels on the dish (and only 1 in English), and I won’t be tempted to pay for Spanish channels ever again after the treatment I got from UbiWorld. I got the dish installed so I could get Arirang on Intelsat 8 and at least Arirang will stay on Intelsat 19 for the forseeable future. Then again I’ll get Arirang on Intelsat19 C-band on the big dish when I fix it all up, so then I can find somewhere else to point my 90cm dish.
